Adopt-A-Book

Adopt-A-Book engages campus and community members in the effort to get books into the hands of our children during the weekly book hour sessions. One semester’s worth of books for Global Book Hour can cost up to $4,000.

For only $15, individuals can sponsor the purchase of book that will be given to a Buffalo child. Sponsors can design, dedicate, and sign a bookplate that will be adhered to the inside cover of the donated book.

In November 2012, participants of the first Adopt-A-Book fundrasier enjoyed food, music, read-alouds, and more. Over $1,000 was raised. Click here to see photos of the event.

The Global Book Hour program is completely free of charge for participants. GBH is maintained by donations for books and supplies, time offered by volunteers, and support from the campus and community. Your monetary gift can help ensure the continuation of this valuable community program. Please consider donating!

Buffalo State undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates are encouraged to join the Global Book Hour team. Volunteers provide interactive read-alouds, offer reading strategies, faciliate activities, and engage families and children from the Buffalo area.

Volunteer roles and responsibilities (EDU 211) include:

Observation

• Create poster advertising the book and sessions (title/author/picture of book, images from book and/or country, date, time, place)
• Observe all the roles outlined below.
• Log your reflections: note  strengths, what you might do differently, children’s reactions, caregivers’ reactions, any feelings you have.
• Assist where you see you are needed (possibly sitting with a child who seems antsy, art activity) - get involved!
• Create Tip of the Week - an activity families can do to through the week to extend the book.

Introduction

• Gain the attention of the group.
• Locate country on map, demonstrate where it is in relation to Buffalo.
• How can we travel there?
• Relate interesting facts about the country (including cultural).  Pictures, artifacts, etc. are always useful.

Vocabulary 

• Choose 3-4 vocabulary words from the book to teach to the children.
• In an interesting way, reinforce the words.

Read Aloud 

• Introduce the book
• Read the book aloud.
• Pause to ask age appropriate questions along the way (you won’t know the age group until you get there, so be prepared!)
• If you see other groups are still reading when you finish, talk about the book afterward.

Snack/Music 

• Enjoy the food and music!

Activity 

• Create a meaningful activity, based on the theme of the book, that children of multiple ages can complete.  You may have a couple activities for different ages or have some more prepared than others - children can choose depending on their abilities.
• Explain activity and demonstrate.  Show/tell how it relates to the book.
• Always have a completed sample (model) to show.
• Art students will attend most weeks and will also be prepared with an activity.
